Marion County
My father was born in Marion County, Iowa. I'm told that at the age of about 1½ I was taken to live for a while in Marion County, Indiana. For (at least a part of) 4th grade I attended school in Marion County, Arkansas. It's likely that my Prickett ancestors came from Marion County, WV. My cousin, Stephen, is buried in Marion County, Florida.

A favorite poem about Logansport, Indiana
Christmas 1960

Christmas it seems has lost its appeal,
The majesty no longer makes kids squeal.
The time was special when I was a lad,
And the Christmas of ’60 was the best I had.
The weather was chilly, with snow in the air.
I was 8 years old and hadn’t a care.
Went to David’s and Flanigan’s to see Santa Claus,
Though the beard was fake, there were few other flaws!
At that time in Logan – the busses still ran,
And theaters showed westerns, of which I was a fan.
Kresge’s and Woolworth’s had new Christmas toys,
Stagecoaches and horses with Hoppy and Roy.
A soda at Porter’s sure hit the spot.
The O.K. store and Sportland had toys that were hot.
Bazley’s sold meat, I remember it well.
And Penney’s, Sears and Ward’s had many items to sell.
Schiff’s and Rowe’s sold most of our shoes,
Roll Parrot, Red Goose, and Buster Brown, too.
Ray’s, Tanguy’s and Forgey’s had milk for our shakes,
And we went to Irene’s Pantry for cookies and cakes.
They’re gone now – even Roebuck left, too!
The Gourmet Cafeteria is called the "Vu".
Clara Ann’s and Viola’s sold dresses and hats,
And the dear old Roxy even had rats!
We went to Bailey’s, Greenies, and the dear Golden Rule,
Elvers and Mohlman’s sold us watches and jewels.
Bennett’s and Foster’s provided chairs and a couch,
And the corner policeman was never a grouch!
Now my parents are gone – I’m over 50 years old,
And mall celebrations all fit the same mold.
When things are tough and life gets me down,
I remember that Christmas in Logan’s downtown!!

The above poem captures people and places of my youth and a bit of the ethos of things as they were then.

post is about my time in Indiana. I started first grade in Fulton,
Indiana. I was really looking forward to the first day of school. I
came home from school with a bloody nose. I went back the next day.
There was so much to learn!
My grandmother helped raise me. She was 64 when I was born. A lot of
energy was needed. I was shuttled more than a few times between my
mother's and my grandparents' attending fourteen schools. Finally my
sophomore year found me back in (Logansport) Indiana where I stayed
until graduating.
My First Posterous Post
Curt Witcher has shamed me into this post.
I was raised in three states: Illinois, Indiana and Arkansas. Thispost is about my time in Indiana. I started first grade in Fulton,
Indiana. I was really looking forward to the first day of school. I
